Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Lowepro Fastpack 250 (Red)Customer Review: Another Lowepro gem Summary: 4 Stars
The Lowepro Fastpack 250 is an excellent option if you are looking for a photo backpack. As you expect with Lowepro, the quality is top-notch. The zippers, seams, and materials are all high quality and sturdy. The capacity of the bag is also quite good, although don't be fooled by the description on the Amazon site-- the photo shown in the write-up is of the Fastpack 350, not the 250. As such, there is not room for 2 additional lenses in the divided area in the middle of the pack. In the 250, these areas are quite narrow, about the width of my Canon 430EX II flash or 4-5 Cokin P filter cases. Still, I was able to pack quite a bit into this bag. In the main/lower compartment I was able to pack:
* Canon 30D body with 17-55mm f2.8 lens and hood
* Really Right Stuff BH-55 ball head
* Canon 500d close-up lens
* Canon 50mm f1.4 lens
* Canon 1.4x multiplier
* Canon 430EX II flash and case
* 4x5 ND Grad filter in case
* 77mm Singh-Ray Vari-ND Duo filter
* Set of 3 Kenko extension tubes
* 3 Pocket wizards
* Arctic Butterfly loupe
In the upper compartment I packed:
* Canon 70-200mm f2.8 IS lens and hood in its case
* Tiffen 6-slot filter pouch with filters
* 2 spare camera batteries
* Arctic Butterfly
* Quick release tripod mount for lens
* 2 Honl speed straps
* Wireless remote camera trigger
* Spare lens end-cap
* Laptop power supply
In the bottom pocket I packed:
* 2 Cokin P filter cases
* Battery charger
I didn't pack anything in the upper outside pocket, but it has room for narrow items (such as a laptop power supply).
All of this (as well as my laptop) fits snugly in the pack, but I still could have fit additional small items in any of the compartments/pockets. An additional mid-range lens would fit if I wanted to attach my tripod ball head to my tripod rather than carrying it separately. As you can tell, the Fastpack 250 is quite roomy... BTW, I was also able to pack all of the above in the bag when I attached my 70-200mm f2.8 lens to my body and stored it in the lower compartment-- just had to move a few things to the top instead.
The laptop sleeve is very well padded and easily fits my 15.4" Mac Book. I haven't tried, but I could probably fit the power supply in the laptop sleeve as well.
I will echo a few of the complaints about this bag-- no all-weather cover, no additional D-rings, etc., that can be used to attach a tripod, no sternum strap... Also, I would have sacrificed some of the upper compartment to have 2 full (lens) sized divided areas in the bottom compartment instead of the half-sized ones there now.
I was able to carry my tripod by threading a leg through the straps that hold down the cover over the outside lower pocket. This basically allows the tripod to ride below the bag, and the straps hold it securely enough so that it doesn't bounce while I am walking. It may not be as good/convenient as dedicated tripod straps, but it works quite effectively for me.
The bag is quite comfortable to wear, although when packed full (20+ pounds), it does tire my shoulders after extended hikes. This is where a sternum strap would really help. The side-entry feature works well-- although only if you are wearing both shoulder straps. If you are someone who often uses just a single shoulder strap to carry your pack over your right shoulder, then the side entry feature isn't of much use as you still have to set the pack down to access it.
Overall, the Lowepro Fastpack 250 is an excellent case with just a couple minor flaws. I highly recommend it!
